First Week Success: First Day of Classes

Today marks the first day of the semester. It’s a very exciting time that is full of unknowns. Here are some tips to get you started on the right foot:

  • Get to class 5-10 minutes early. You want to do this so that you can find a seat in the first couple of rows or in the middle.
  • While you are waiting for class to get started you should introduce yourself to the people around you. Exchange names and contact information. You have just obtained your first study buddies! These are people that you can contact when you need notes after missing a class period or when it’s time to study for the test.
  • During the first day, the professor will hand out the syllabus. This document contains a lot of information and you do not want to lose it. Be sure to highlight anything the professor mentions is important including office hours, large assignments and the calendar for the semester.
  • After class, take the opportunity to introduce yourself to the professor. This makes the professor seem a lot less intimidating so that you are more likely to go to their office when you have questions. It also helps your professor learn your name!
  • When you get back to your dorm, put any important dates the professor gave you into your planner. This should include assignment due dates and then begin on your homework!

What's your favorite way to get the semester started?
