Finals: Foods

Foods to help enhance your memory (during finals week):

Antioxidants
Vitamins C, E, and Beta Carotene

Finals: Tips

Sleep- On average, those who pull all-nighters have lower GPAs. Sleep deprivation is <5 hours/night so go to bed! And the artificial light from your phone stimulates the brain to keep you awake, so to fall asleep faster disconnect form your devices earlier in the evening.

Touch- Fidgety? Grab a stress ball or ask your RA to host a program where you make your own. Squeezing a stress ball can help you focus on cognitive tasks and it helps relax your muscles.
Smell- Certain scents like lavender and rosemary aid concentration and have a calming effect. Smelling a certain scent, such as a perfume while studying and during the exam may help with recall. The presence of a supportive friends has been proven to reduce stress; nasally sensing friends’ pheromones is the cause of this effect.
Taste- Healthy doses of milk & yogurt, oatmeal, blueberries, fish, dark bittersweet chocolate, banana’s and green veggies all have nutrients to help with concentration, energy, and cognitive functions. Remember water hydrates the brain, improving concentration and eliminating toxins.
Movement- 5 to 30 minutes of silent meditation or a focus on breathing each day releases tress. Hitting the gym releases endorphins to improve your mood and decrease health problems.

Majors

Finance: Students will learn the ability to take a client’s goals, resources and options into consideration while making suggestions for their continued and financial growth
Management: Management majors acquire general skills in the fundamental areas of business while developing the ability to deal with people, to make complex decisions, and to adapt to change. Three emphasis areas are offered- Business Admin, Human resources Management, and Supply Chain and Operations Management
Marketing: Students will Develop tools needed to create and environment where the ultimate diversity goals are supported through research, design and maintenance in every aspect of the organization to satisfy your target audiences needs
Real Estate: Students will develop an understanding of market analysis, site selection, economics relating to land use, and professional services that support real estate transactions
Construction Management: Students will oversee details regarding the workforce, materials, equipment, and safety issues for workers. Student will divide activities into logical steps during the planning stage, monitor each step along the way to ensure the project meets deadline and budget requirements
Public Administration: Students will center on public policy by interpreting and evaluating the policies within the government framework. These policies include federal, state, and local
Math: the goal of the math major is to introduce some of the central idea in various areas of mathematics and to develop problem solving ability by helping students combine creative thinking with rigorous reasoning
Accounting: Accountants analyze business events and transactions and use the information to determine the financial condition and operating results of business
Economics: Economists investigate a wide range of issues centering on problems of economic stability, growth, and the efficient use of recourse. One of the important objectives of the economist is to explain how our economic system functions
Management Information Systems: Students will focus on business process of organizations and the information technology utilized on those organizations. MIS students learn to design, implement, and maintain effective information systems in organizations.
Communication- Public Relations: Students interested in public relations will study the management of communication between an organization and its publics. Students will combine a convenient argument with an appropriate medium to best deliver their message

Did You Pack the Sunscreen?

SUNSCREEN PROTECTS EVERY SKIN TYPE
If you have a darker complexion, the melanin in your skin confers some natural protection from sunburns, but you still need protection from harmful ultraviolet rays. While people with fair skin are more likely to develop skin cancer due to sun exposure, people with dark skin tones are at risk of more serious kinds of cancer when they get it. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that EVERYONE wear sunscreen daily for the safety of their skin.

MOST OF WHAT YOU CALL AGING IS REALLY YEARS OF SUN DAMAGE.
Dermatologists with the Skin Cancer Foundation estimate that 90 percent of visible aging comes not from the number of candles on your birthday cake but the hours you’ve spent in the sun. Wearing sunscreen daily saves your skin from years of visible damage later.

THE SUN IS STRONG EVEN WHEN IT’S NOT SUNNY OUT!
Many people think they don’t need sunscreen on overcast days or for brief stints in the sun, but for the ultraviolet rays that damage your skin, a little cloud cover means nothing. UV light penetrates clouds with ease, so you need protection even on cloudy days.

SUN DAMAGE IS CUMULATIVE.
Don’t be fooled into thinking you can build up a safe tan; there’s no such thing. Every exposure contributes to possible damage at the cellular level. Spare your skin tomorrow and wear your sunscreen today.
USE SUNCREEN THAT…
1.    Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays)
2.    Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30 or higher
3.    Water resistance

OTHER WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Seek shade when appropriate, remembering that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.

Wear protective clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, when possible.
Use extra caution near water, snow and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn.
Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet that may include vitamin supplements. Don’t seek the sun.
Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look tan, you may wish to use a self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it.

Geography: Students will focus on place and space on the earth. Topics that are covered can include: globalization, pollution and disease outbreaks. Using cutting edge technology geographers are also able to analyze maps and representations of land and people.
Health Promotion: Promotes the health of the general public using a wide variety of methods in a wide variety of settings. This major can cover women’s health, global health, environmental health or health promotion and education.

Physics: Students will focus on the mechanics of our world looking at theories and then applying them in real time. Students will become involved in critical thinking about how things function in our world.
Earth Science: Students will focus on the natural occurrences that happen on this earth. This can include a wide variety from volcanism to flooding to solar eclipses.

Biology: Students will focus on the study of living organisms. Biology can focus into a wide variety of careers from being in the health field to field biologists.
Chemistry: Students will focus on the fundamental building blocks of life and how they work. Students will also focus on how these materials function in the natural world.

Science-Teaching: A career in science teaching will allow you to combine your enjoyment of science with the rewards of helping others learn new ideas and skills in the many areas of the natural sciences.

Majors

Electrical Engineering: EET is a broad-based, technically-oriented education that emphasizes the application of today’s technology to solve problems, design and develop products, and improve processes, procedures, equipment and facilities
Graphic Technologies: Students gain knowledge and experience with technology necessary to produce the millions of imaged products from start to finish. They also learn about successful management and supervision to operate business enterprises

Technology Education: Includes organization, resources, processes, and management technologies. These studies take place within the disciplines of mathematics, science, industrial management, and production

Management Information Systems: Students will focus on the business processes of organizations and the information technology utilized in those organizations. MIS students learn to design, implement, and maintain effective information systems in organizations
Networking and System Administration: Students will be responsible for the administration and troubleshooting of critical network systems and learn how to troubleshoot computer hardware. They will also learn to install and manage various server platforms and offer customer service to users and environments

Technology Management: Students will learn IT management philosophy, system development, and business strategy. They will utilize available technology and determine the technological strategies that will best suit the needs of the business
Electronic Media: Students will study how to use electronically mediated communication and the implications of doing so. It is a broad based program that provides students with a strong foundation in media production and management

Computer Science: Students will theorize, develop, and maintain exciting, cutting edge computer based technologies. They will also solve problems, create new technologies, conduct research, and create innovative ways to apply computer technologies
